Environment and Climate Action

The Albanese Labor Government is committed to delivering meaningful action on climate change and protecting and preserving more of our beautiful environment. We have made the target of Net Zero by 2050 law.

We want Australia to become a renewable energy superpower. Since we were elected, we have approved a record 80 new renewable energy projects – enough to power nearly every Australian home.

A re-elected Albanese Labor Government will deliver:

  • Cheaper Home Batteries Program to reduce the cost of home batteries by 30%, cutting emissions and reducing energy bills.
  • Energy efficiency grants for small and medium-sized business to fund a range of energy upgrades.
  • $250 million for Saving Aussie Bushland Program to save another 30 million hectares of bushland – an area bigger than New Zealand.
  • $1.2 billion to protect the Great Barrier Reef.
  • $12 million to deliver increased ocean protection – building on Labor’s historic ocean conservation work which means Australia now protects more ocean than any other country.
  • $76 million to establish Environmental Protection Australia.

Since we were elected in 2022, the Albanese Labor Government has:

  • Doubled funding for national parks.
  • Quadrupled the size of Australia’s most remote marine park – the biggest act of ocean conservation on the planet in 2024.
  • Established new Indigenous Protected Areas that cover an area bigger than Tasmania.
  • Doubled number of Indigenous Rangers to better protect and conserve more of Australia’s land and sea.
  • Blocked Clive Palmer’s big Queensland coal mine that could have leached pollution onto the Great Barrier Reed.
  • Boosted recycling capacity by a million tonnes a year with a $1 billion investment, stopping paper, soft and difficult to recycle plastics going to landfill.
  • Stopped Jabiluka from being mined for uranium – and added it to Kakadu National Park instead.
  • Saved Toondah Harbour from destruction, protecting internationally important wetlands.
  • $200 million to restore urban rivers and waterways.
  • $550 million to protect threatened plants and animals and tackle the feral animals and weeds killing our native species.
  • Made target of Net Zero emissions by 2050 law, reducing emissions by 43% by 2030.
  • 25% increase in renewables in energy grid in 2 years – with renewables meeting 46% of demand in the national grid last quarter.
  • Approved 80 renewable energy projects – enough to power more than 10 million homes, nearly every single Australian household.
  • $20 billion to modernise energy grid, investing in battery storage and transmission.
  • Delivered street-side chargers for electric vehicles.
  • Established New Vehicle Efficiency Standard for cheaper, cleaner cars.
  • Advanced strong new packaging laws with mandatory minimum levels of recycled content.
  • Rescuing the Murary-Darling Basin Plan – helping stop rivers dying and securing drinking water for 3 million people.
  • Established the world’s first Nature Repair Market, making it easier to invest in nature restoration.
  • Passed stronger laws to protect the ozone layer.
  • Boosted environment laws with a stronger ‘water trigger’ to make sure the impacts of coal and gas projects on water are considered.
  • Delivered Australia’s first national environmental chemicals standards – banning or ensuring the safety of 900 industrial chemicals, including ‘forever chemicals’ such as PFOS, PFOA and PFHxS from 1 July 2025.
  • Passed strong laws to force big polluters to cut emissions, so Australia gets to Net Zero carbon pollution by 2050.
