About Caroline Chisholm
The Chisholm electorate was named in honour of Caroline Chisholm (1808-77).
Caroline Chisholm was known for her social work, philanthropy and social justice advocacy in New South Wales and Victoria with migrant women and girls.
She established the Female Immigrants Home for vulnerable migrant girls and established employment agencies in rural areas to find employment for female immigrants. Her volunteer work not only provided shelter, but helped unemployed young women find work and build their lives in Australia.
Caroline Chisholm advocated for improved conditions on the ships to Australia. She successfully lobbied for free passage for the wives and children of convicts, so they could be reunited with their loved ones.
During the gold rush in Victoria, Caroline Chisholm successfully pushed the government to set up shelters along the roads to meet the demand for adequate accommodation.
