About Dr Carina Garland MP

Hello everyone!

I’m Carina Garland, your Federal Member of Parliament for Chisholm.

I am proud to represent our vibrant, multicultural community and be a champion for Chisholm.

I grew up in the south-eastern and eastern suburbs that I now represent in Parliament.

I was raised in a family who ran their own medical practice – I understand the hard work involved in making a business work and the vital importance of affordable, accessible and empathetic healthcare for everyone in our community.

My maternal grandparents came to Australia from a war-ravaged Italy, to build a secure life for themselves and their family. I want to ensure that the opportunity to have a rewarding life is available to all.

I am passionate about education. I went to school locally in Glen Iris before completing my undergraduate degree at Monash University in Clayton. I worked hard and was fortunate to receive a scholarship to undertake a PhD, and upon completion, worked as an academic.

I know that every child deserves a high quality and accessible education, from the very earliest years until they complete their secondary education.

I believe lifelong learning and our higher education and skills sectors are critical to make sure our communities and our economy thrives. The government I am part of is investing in education, making childcare cheaper, reforming our universities to make them stronger, and delivering fee-free TAFE.

I understand the importance of delivering meaningful action on climate change. I believe our future is in renewable energy, and that we need to protect our environment for future generations. I am proud to be part of a government that is delivering on our legislated climate targets to reach Net Zero by 2050.  

I am really ambitious for our community and for our country and am so privileged to be able to fight for better healthcare, education, jobs, climate action, and a strong economy in Canberra.

In May 2022, you elected me as your Federal Member for Parliament. I don’t take a moment for granted as your MP.

I am here to serve our community and represent you in our Federal Parliament. I take my role as your advocate very seriously.
